If you are interested in a little of the geological makeup of Red Rock, the buttons here will take you to different spots on the Geological Story of Eastern Marin County.
The City of San Francisco has a real estate property summary where they show how much acreage is privately owned in the City and County.
Red Rock Island has been mentioned from time to time in the news. Below are some stories, along with some excerps taken from Herb Caen's column, while he was writing for the San Francisco Chronicle.

. . . Today's shopportunity: six-acre Red Rock, the only privately owned island in the Bay, is yours for a song. Mack Lewis Durning of S'Leandro, its owner, has it on the market (and hey, Lamar Hunt, there could be oil) . . .

. . . UNSUNG hero of the week, alumni div.: the U. of Nebraska grad, a resident of San Rafael, who paddled his kayak out to Red Rock Island (nr. the Richmond-S'Rafael Bridge) and, in the spirit of the Marines on Okinawa, climbed to the top and planted Nebraska's red-and-white flag on the summit. Can Penn State top that? The Coast Guard confirms the banner is there and, quote "has no objection" to its staying. Numbah One! . . .

Coast Guard Rescues 9 Stranded Teenagers

Larkspur - The Coast Guard helped nine teenagers last night who were stranded on a San Francisco Bay island after their rowboat floated away from them.

Coast Guard spokesman Howard Coe said the boys, between the ages of 16 and 18, were affiliated with the Marin Rowing Club and had rowed their boat to Red Rock Island around 6:45 p.m. to plant a flag. The island is south of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge.

Coe said it was unclear last night whether the boys were chaperoned by an older person. He said, however, that they were being escorted by a chase boat, which was not big enough to rescue them.

"Letters To The Editors"

GREATER SAN FRANCISCO

Editor -- When you computed the land area of San Francisco, did you include the area of Red Rock Island? Red Rock Island lies just south of the Richmond-San Rafael Bridge and lies within three counties, a little in Marin, more in San Francisco, and mostly in Contra Costa. But some area is in San Francisco County. My copy of Thomas Bros. Maps shows the island, but does not name it.
